Matt Drury

Biography

Matt trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

At the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham, he lit Cassie and in the same year the tour of Scooping The Pot. He also worked as Assistant Lighting Designer to Hugh Vanstone on On Approval at the Watermill Theatre Newbury and Moll Flanders at the Lyric Hammersmith. Prior to leaving The Everyman, he lit a newly commissioned production of Framed, which was performed at the Cottesloe, Royal National Theatre.

Matt became Resident at the Thorndike Theatre, Leatherhead, where he lit numerous productions which include; Under Their Hats, which transferred to the Criterion, The Magic of the West End Musical, Nicholas Nickelby, The Hollow Crown, Guys and Dolls, and the Player’s Victorian Music Hall. For Bill Kenwright Ltd, he lit The Flipside, Shirley Valentine, The Gentle Hook, and the national tours of Fools Rush In, Two of A Kind and Catch Me If You Can.

Upon leaving the Thorndike, Matt became involved in lighting non-theatre events, such as being Lighting Consultant for the Green Room at the Café Royal and many corporate and award events, as diverse as Best Factory Awards and GMTV’s Supermums!

Theatre credits include Deadly Nightcap, Sweet Revenge, Joking Apart at the Theatre Royal Windsor and Eastbourne; Dirt at Teatro Technis, London, Great Expectations at Wellington College; for Bill Kenwright Ltd and the Theatre Royal Windsor; Dead Certain, Cinderella, Dangerous Obsession, Spider’s Web,

The Gentle Hook, Dark Corners, Murder By Misadventure, Suddenly at Home, Absent Friends, Seasons Greetings, Same Time Next Year, A Murder Is Announced, The Sound Of Murder, The Secretary Bird, House Guest, Boys Will Be Boys, A Touch of Danger, Bedroom Farce, Jack and the Beanstalk, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Cinderella, Murder Is Announced, Absurd Person Singular, Round and Round the Garden, Stage Struck and the 2001 national tour of An Ideal Husband.

Recent national tours include The Haunted Hotel for Ivan Hale Productions, Arsenic and Old Lace for Kenny Wax & Nick Brooke productions, and the inaugural production of The Hollow for The Agatha Christie Theatre Company. Recently Matt lit and Private Lives at the Theatre Royal Windsor and remounting simultaneous national tours of The Hollow and Arsenic and Old Lace, and designing a new production of Dangerous Corner, directed by Bob Tompson. Matt lit the national tour of The Unexpected Guest for The Agatha Christie Theatre Company, directed by Joe Harmston.

Matt taught lighting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art for 5 years and lit LAMDA’s European Tour of Daemons. Matt was appointed Head of Lighting at RADA. Matt then returned to LAMDA as Technical Director. Matt was Associate Lighting Designer for The Woman In Black tour in Singapore and India.

Matt is currently Head of Lighting at the Royal Court Theatre, where he recently lit 2 short plays by Mark Ravenill, Birth of a Nation directed by Ramin Gray and The Mother directed by Max Stafford Clarke.
