Nicholas Michaletos

Biography

I began my lighting career at the Performing Arts Council of Transvaal, (PACT), where I learned the basics of my profession and eventually ended up designing the lighting for many opera, ballet and musical productions for the company.
I have also designed the lighting for productions and corporate events in America, China, Korea and Malaysia as well as many European countries including Russia.

In 2009 I started a new company, ‘Nicklelight’, specialising in production lighting design and technical coordination. One of the highlights of this new venture was being contracted to design the lighting for the opera ‘Artaxerxes’, at the Royal Opera House in London. I was also appointed as Lighting Designer for the new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, ‘The Boys in the Photograph’ which was staged at the Joburg Theatre as part of the 2010 world cup celebrations.

In 2010 I was nominated in London for a ‘Knights of Illumination’ award for my lighting of Artexerxes and was similarly nominated in 2011 for the lighting design of ‘The Boys in the Photograph’ In Johannesburg. In 2010, I was inducted into the South African Technical Professional Services Association, (TPSA), ‘Hall of Fame’, for services to the industry.

2011 has been busy in the corporate entertainment field, projects included providing designs for sets and lighting as well as technical management for the launch of the ‘Life Diamonds foundation’ as well as being contracted as lighting designer for the first ‘Sports Awards of Gauteng’, the production was made for television and was very well received. I have also provided lighting designs for several of the show-stands at the Johannesburg International Motor Show.

On the theatrical front, earlier in the year Mark Hawkins, one of South Africa’s top choreographers, invited me to light his contemporary dance piece, ‘Hotel’ which was a fantastic success at the Market theatre in Johannesburg and I have once again provided lighting design and technical management services for Beautiful Creatures, a hugely popular children’s theatre production at the Pieter Toerien theatre in Johannesburg, for Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management.
