Richard won a Drama Desk Award for outstanding lighting design and received an Outer Critics Circle nomination for Sweeney Todd on Braodway. Other award winning productions have included the, West End and UK national tour of Sweeney Todd, the West End and Watermill Theatre production of the Gondoliers (TMA Award Winner Best Musical 2001), The Watermill Theatre production of Fiddler on the Roof (TMA Award Winner Best Musical 2002)

Richard has recently worked on lighting designs for Spongebob Squarepants the sponge that could fly! for the UK Tour, Horrid Henry Live and Horrid for Watershed productions, The Hot Mikado and Sunset Boulevard for the Watermill in Newbury, The Homecoming, Humpty Dumpty The Panto and The Railway Children for York Theatre Royal, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf for the Manchester Royal Exchange and Whiter than Snow for Graeae theatre company.

National tours have included Beautiful Thing, Wuthering Heights, Rasputin, Candide, Mack and Mabel & Sweeney Todd. West End work includes Sunset Boulevard, The Gondoliers, Mack and Mabel, When Pigs Fly, Female Parts and Sweeney Todd. Repertory theatre work includes Behind the Scenes at the Museum, A Taste of Honey, Piaf, Abandonment, Private Lives and Amadeus for York Theatre Royal; Martin Guerre, The Hot Mikado, Carmen, Fiddler on the Roof, Irma la Douce, and Cabaret for the Watermill Theatre Newbury; The White Album, All Quiet on the Western Front , The Man Who, Satin 'N' Steel and Chicken Soup with Barley for Nottingham Playhouse; Mary Barton and Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf for Manchester Royal Exchange.

He has also designed for The Royal Northern College of Music, The Norwich Playhouse; The Duchy Ballet, Cornwall; Covent Garden Linbury Studio; Culture and Congress Centre Lucerne, Switzerland; The Swan Theatre, Worcester; Library Theatre, Manchester; Everyman Theatres, Liverpool and Cheltenham; Arden Theatre; Manchester, Bolton Octagon Theatre; Birmingham REP; Oxford Playhouse and The Theatre on the Lake, Keswick.
