Edward Saunders

Ed is a lighting designer, relighter, and technician, for stage and film.

Starting out life in the theatre as a follow-spot operator at the Oxford Playhouse, Ed began lighting shows in black box studios as a student before scaling up to design for a range of venues across the UK and abroad, building a portfolio which includes site-specific work, fringe shows, and international touring productions. With a design background in lighting works of physical theatre and storytelling, it is the same quest for vibrancy, dynamism, and playful stagecraft which he explores in all his work and which has motivated his more recent ventures into opera and dance.

Ed received a commendation for design from the National Student Drama Festival for his work on Gruffdog Theatre’s critically acclaimed Peer Gynt. Since then, his most notable design work has included lighting a touring production of Twelfth Night in Japan, as well as Luke Brown Dance's touring production of For You I Long The Longest, supported by Arts Council England.

In 2018, he travelled to Kyiv where he lit a showcase of new Ukrainian writing. His work on this project now forms part of the Staging Places digital exhibition of performance design, which will be represented by the Association of British Theatre Designers at the 2019 Prague Quadrennial.

Ed is a freelance relighter for the National Dance Company Wales, recently joining them on their 2019 international tour of the UK, Austria, and Germany.

Ed is an associate artist with Ante Terminum Productions.

Earlier credits include Lights Over Tesco Car Park (Poltergeist Theatre), Hedda (Peripeteia) at the Oxford Playhouse, a site-specific production of Curlew River at St Bartholomew the Great in London, an international touring production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (OUDS with Thelma Holt), and productions of Fatzer (Di Trevis), Rhinoceros (Gruffdog) and Ballyturk (Straightface).

Anna Karenina - The Musical

Kitty was perfectly poised at an oblique angle to a full length mirror, giving the audience multiple views of her while the lighting beamed down red and pink – just gorgeous
Andrew Bell, Daily Info 26/11/2018
A second tuneful, delicate duet for 'The Unknown' played out bathed in mauve and turquoise, and near the end of the play there was a stunning moment where the anguished Anna left a darkened stage to be caught in a fleeting, brilliant light as she disappeared.

For You I Long The Longest

Once again Saunders’ lighting is wonderfully inventive, casting the stage in shadows and mystery.
Josephine Leask, DanceTabs 07/12/2018
A dark, brooding atmosphere is created by Edward Saunders’ simple yet striking lighting design.
