Robinson Crusoe

The staging is aided by exceptional lighting design by Max Blackman, making me think they can’t have left an inch of bare pole in the rig.
Pete Shaw, Broadway Baby 01/12/2018

The American Wife

Max Blackman’s lighting suitably complements the blocking, drawing attention to pockets of action whilst set changes happen on the remainder of the stage.
Daniel Perks, Exeunt Magazine 12/09/2016

Dark Tourism

Max Blackman’s lighting and Mike Thacker’s sound is an exhilarating combination and the play’s energy never drops.
Camilla Gurtler, A Younger Theatre 03/10/2015

Happy Birthday Without You

The lighting and music were also very cleanly cut and fitted the play down to a ‘T’. Each piece of music that was used heightened the emotion that Jalay was demonstrating with her words or actions; it was comic, it was tense, it was brilliant. In a similar sense, the lighting added to these moments as well in a way that, unless you were specifically looking out for it, was subtle enough to manipulate your feelings without being noticed.
Kat Caunter, London Theatre 1 23/01/2015

Jesus Christ Superstar

Lighting designed by Max Blackman was extremely clever, using spots and moving, flashing lights to create very dramatic effects.
Sarah Falcus, Sardines Magazine 06/06/2014
Dramatic lighting – beautifully designed by Max Blackman – set the tone for a gritty, powerful evening.
Alice Anderson, Amdram 06/06/2014

On The Permanence Of Fugitive Colours

The lighting design was simple but effective, with nine bare light bulbs reacting to the action on stage – orgasmically flashing to Steve and Rebecca’s first sexual encounter and vacillating between dimmed and blazing as their relationship peaks and troughs.
Carly Halse, Female Arts 12/08/2013
