Roger Simonsz

Roger Simonsz was born in Scheveningen, Netherlands and bought his first super 8 camera aged 13 with money he'd earned doing newspaper rounds. When he was 14 his father was posted to South Africa and Roger finished school in Cape Town where, aged 17, he was a runner on a local production. When his father was subsequently posted to London he followed, studying video and electronic music at Middlesex Polytechnic followed by studying technical theatre arts at Rose Bruford College of speech and drama. He then followed a theatrical career in the lighting department of various regional repertory theatres in the UK while building up a large lighting design portfolio. He also continued to make videos and eventually chose to settle in Luxembourg to retrain in film, making use of the newly instituted tax shelter agreement that attracted a large number of foreign films to the duchy. He rose through the ranks of the camera department completing many films as second unit director of photography as well as operator. He has since settled in Paris and continues to work on TV and Film projects, both French and foreign. He was invited to speak at Showlight 2005 in Munich on the use of colour in film and occasionally writes articles for various trade magazines. He is a member of: the ALD (Association of Lighting Designers), the GBCT (Guild of British Camera Technicians), the STLD (Society of Television Lighting Directors) and the AFCF (Association Français des Cadreurs de Fiction).
