Simon Wilkinson

Simon designs lighting for theatre, opera and dance in all shapes, sizes and locations.

For Robert Lepage and Ex Machina, Simon lit The Magic Flute as part of the Quebec City Opera Festival.

For the National Theatre of Scotland, he lit The 306: Dawn, Dragon (with Vox Motus and Tianjin People's Art Theatre, China), The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish, Roman Bridge, Truant and A Sheep Called Skye. For Vox Motus, his designs include Flight, Dragon, The Infamous Brothers Davenport (with the Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh), The Not-So-Fatal Death of Grandpa Fredo, Bright Black and the multi-award winning Slick. Work for Magnetic North includes Our Fathers; Kora (with Dundee Rep), Sex and God, Pass the Spoon, Wild Life and After Mary Rose.

Other theatre designs include Meet Me at Dawn, Letters to Morrissey, Black Beauty, Grain in the Blood and Tracks of the Winter Bear (Traverse Theatre); Glory on Earth, The Iliad, The Weir, The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe, Hedda Gabler, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, The BFG, Bondagers, A Christmas Carol and Cinderella (Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh); Knives in Hens, Aladdin (Perth Theatre); Crumbles Search for Christmas (West Yorkshire Playhouse); God of Carnage and This Wide Night (Tron Theatre, Glasgow); Teenage Trilogy, Mamababame and PUSH (Curious Seed);  Fisk, The Lost Things and Feral (Tortoise in a Nutshell);Dr Stirlingshire's Discovery and Light Boxes (Grid Iron); Citizen (Plan B); Pondlife (Catherine Wheels); The Rise and Inevitable Fall of Lucas Petit (Sleeping Warrior); Blow Off (Julia Taudevin); Dance of Death (Candice Edmunds), Grounded (Firebrand); Moonbeam on a Cat's Ear and In Her Shadows (Jabuti Theatre); After The End and Topdog / Underdog (Citizens Theatre, Glasgow); 13 Sunken Years (Stellar Quines and Lung Ha); Chalk Farm and The Static (ThickSkin); HeLa and Skewered Snails (Iron Oxide); Whatever Gets You Through the Night (The Arches); My Name is Rachel Corrie (Mull Theatre); The Mark of Zorro and The Hunted (Visible Fictions); Honk! (Royal & Derngate) and Encourage The Others (Almeida Theatre). He lit the 2010 season for Pitlochry Festival Theatre.

Simon has won the CATS Award for Best Design three times - for Flight in 2018, Black Beauty in 2017 and Bondagers in 2015. Over the years, his lighting has created a Guinness World Record, brought 30,000 people to a windswept Highland Forest, and caused reports of an alien invasion.

Flight

The richly colored, minutely detailed visuals — designed by Mr. Harrison and Rebecca Hamilton and beautifully lit by Simon Wilkinson — are the wonder of “Flight.”
LAURA COLLINS-HUGHES, New York Times 12/02/2018
Flight is extraordinary ... gorgeously lit
Susannah Clapp, The Observer 20/08/2017
unforgettable in both content and form, a devastating concatenation of dreams and nightmares on the run.
The New Yorker

Bondagers

a deeply moving, richly textured piece of theatre that gains great power from Jamie Vartan’s impressionistic set of wood, soil and smoke, superb lighting by Simon Wilkinson and the strong sense of community evoked by the cast
Allan Radcliffe, The Times 31/10/2014
Kemp’s production is lifted by some fine, misty lighting from Simon Wilkinson
Joyce MacMillan, The Scotsman 27/10/2014
This sense of space distinguishes Lu Kemp’s painterly staging. From the moment the cast appear in silhouette at the back of Jamie Vartan’s elemental set, Kemp treats the stage like it had the full dimensions of a field. Thanks to Simon Wilkinson’s superb lighting, those dimensions are always uncertain. As the colour temperature increases from cold monochrome to chilly sepia, the landscape is always bigger than those who tread on it
Mark Fisher, The Guardian 27/10/2014

it's difficult to resist ... the sheer visual beauty and imagination of the telling
Joyce MacMillan, The Scotsman 16/10/2013

Feral

Technically, visually, aurally and politically, it’s a tremendous show.
Mark Fisher, The Scotsman 09/08/2013

Antigone

Design elements, from Becky Minto’s honey-coloured set to Kat Smith’s costumes and the lighting design by Simon Wilkinson, complement the sparse power of the text,
Allan Radcliffe, The List 19/03/2012

The Not-So-Fatal Death of Grandpa Fredo

Simon Wilkinson’s lighting design, too, is striking, juxtaposing the yellowy sunsets of a Midwestern evening with the icy blue of a freezer’s light

Joy Watters, Dundee Courier 29/07/2010

Honk!

Denvir’s pastel shades are enhanced through the seasons by Simon Wilkinson’s luscious lighting. Both provide major contributions to ensuring the story and its human world in animal form are treated to a vigorous, colourful outing.
Timothy Ramsden, Reviews Gate 10/12/2009

Bright Black

artfully lit
Robert Dawson Scott, The Times 07/10/2009
The use of darkness and light (by lighting designer Simon Wilkinson) to create stage illusions is exceptional

Michael Cox, Onstage Scotland

Peter Pan

... one of the finest pantos of the season
Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman 19/12/2008

Slick

Slick depended on split-second timing and perfectly-placed lighting to sustain its unique and unforgettable theatrical world, which combined the pathos of Oliver Twist with the savage satire of Viz magazine in a dark, wicked and explosively funny show
CATS Judging Panel, Scottish Critics Award citation 14/06/2009
a show whose whole creative team deserve a standing ovation
Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman 16/08/2008

Molly Whuppie

Kenneth Spiers, Daily Mail
complemented by memorable lighting
Mark Rhodes, St Andrews Citizen
the lighting, sound and set design provided the final touches to a masterful whole
Dundee Evening Telegraph
... the midnight blues and cornfield yellows of Simon Wilkinson's rich and vivid lighting
Neil Cooper, The Herald

THE GLASS MENAGERIE

There is much to admire from the impeccable stage management to Simon Wilkinson's soft and subtle lighting
Robert Dawson Scott, The Times
moodily lit ... Williams' love of theatrical resources are carefully and effectively acknowledged
John di Falco, The Stage
the set, lighting and sound designers all have wonderfully realised William's clear instructions ... lit so long shadows interplay with shafts of light, as steam and music drift across the stage
Thelma Good, EdinburghGuide.com
The fine acting from the cast is matched by the performance from the production team. Simon Wilkinson's lighting design reflects the dark threads running throught the script
Alison Anderson, Perthshire Advertiser
evocatively lit by Simon Wilkinson
Joy Watters, Dundee Courier

The Play O' The Wather

The eight-strong cast work well as a team, making full use of the space and taming it to their needs ... thanks largely to Lucinda Meredith's strong design and Simon Wilkinson's excellent and atmospheric lighting
Thom Dibdin, The Stage
A production which for its simple and versatile staging and fun costuming, excellent lighting, endearing style and acute direction deserves to live beyond the Fringe
Thelma Good, EdinburghGuide.com
